ENLifeline and Reflections on InfinityYou are hereby invited to the opening of Kristín Reynisdóttir’s solo exhibition, “Lifelines and Reflections on Eternity,” in the Sculpture Garden on September 19th at 3pm where she presents her musings on form and eternity. In her work at the Sculpture Garden, Kristín reflects on the relationship between form, vegetation and infinity. The tangible, the earth, the seed, plant life and form, becomes a lifeline in the face of what the mind cannot grasp. Infinity is what the mind attempts to comprehend, while the lifeline connects us back to the tangible. The exhibition revolves around the concept of eternity, something that is difficult to comprehend. The mind struggles to conceive of time that has neither a beginning nor an end. Is eternity a line extending into infinity, or a cycle in which something comes into being, disappears and becomes the beginning of something new? Faced with the infinite, we need a lifeline – something to hold on to that connects us to the earth and to the present moment. The cycles of nature can provide such a lifeline. The process of cultivation appears simple at its core: a seed is planted in the earth, receives water and sunlight, grows, bears fruit and produces new seeds. The cycle repeats itself, yet never in precisely the same way. Cultivation also involves human presence. To sow, water, nurture and watch something grow requires care and attentiveness. In this way, human emotions, thoughts and time become intertwined with the cycles of plant life.
